Our gastronomy tour commences in Athens, serving not only as an opportunity to adjust to the local time zone but also as an introduction to Greek culture and history at the heart of Greece. We explore the Parthenon, Acropolis Museum and take a leisurely stroll to Plaka, nestled at the foot of the Acropolis. The following day is dedicated to a comprehensive tour of Athens, delving into various sites and museums that enrich the understanding of this captivating city, this will include a street food walking tour.

There will be time to explore the city and culture today at venues that are off the beaten path, as well as taking in a Greek dance class and open air cinema.

Our journey then takes flight to Chania, the principal city in western Crete. Here, we reside for three nights, allowing ample time to immerse ourselves in the charm of the Old Town and explore the neighboring traditional villages. A highlight is a hands-on cooking experience in the village of Vamos, set within a 200-year-old olive press. Participants have the unique opportunity to prepare authentic village cuisine using the freshest local ingredients. Subsequently, we embark on a scenic drive through Rethymnon to the eco-village-style accommodation in Axos, where we stay for three nights.

Continuing our exploration, we drive to Sitia via Aghios Nikolaos, uncovering the intensive olive-growing region of the Lasithi plateau. Along this route, we visit vineyards and olive groves, meeting local producers and savoring award-winning olive oil from the region. The journey also includes visits to traditional villages and historical sites, providing a holistic experience of the local culture.

En route to Iraklion, we stop at Knossos to explore its famous Minoan ruins. During our stay in Iraklion, an expert in history will guide us through visits to the archaeological museum and other noteworthy sites in this fascinating city.

The gastronomy tour concludes in Iraklion, offering participants the flexibility to either return to Athens, explore other European cities, or extend their journey to additional Greek islands.

What to Expect

The journey begins in Athens with cultural immersion, exploring the, Parthenon, Acropolis and the city’s historical sites as well as a Greek dance class and open air cinema. The tour then ventures to Chania in Crete, where participants experience the old town, seafood tavernas, and a guided tour. A day of exploration in the Apokoronas Region follows, showcasing villages, churches, and natural landscapes.

The itinerary proceeds to Vamos for a hands-on cooking lesson in a 200-year-old olive press, blending local ingredients in a village feast. The journey continues to Axos, an eco-tourist resort, allowing guests to engage in farming activities and cooking experiences.

A visit to the Holy Monastery of Preveli offers historical insights, followed by exploration in Sitia, including visits to olive farms, vineyards, and traditional villages. The tour then heads to Knossos, Iraklion, and concludes with optional departures to Athens, other European cities, or additional Greek islands.

The detailed itinerary spans 13 days, covering each day’s activities, meals, and overnight stays in carefully selected hotels. Activities range from guided city tours, olive oil tastings, and archaeological site visits to leisure days, cooking classes, and cultural presentations.

This tour will take in the best of what Crete has to offer gastronomically as we travel from the west of the island all the way to the East of the largest island in Greece. There will be ample time to relax, swim and enjoy the walks and hikes along the way.

Day 1: Friday, October 4 – Arrive Athens – Meet at Fresh Hotel, City Walk and Welcome Reception

Check into hotel.

Optional walk around the Plaka area in the afternoon, enjoying the markets and cafes at the foot of the Acropolis.

Join us for a welcome reception in the evening at the rooftop bar of our hotel, with views of the Acropolis

Day 2: Saturday, October 5 – Athens and Welcome Dinner

Athens walking street food tour, where we will explore markets, cafés, “ouzerias” and renowned pastry shops in Athens.

In the evening we will participate in a Greek Dance class followed by a group welcome dinner, after which we will retire to the rooftop bar of the Fresh Hotel with its Acropolis views.

Day 3: Sunday, October 6 – Athens Exploration

Breakfast at Fresh Hotel.

Guided walking tour of Athens, visiting Zeus Temple, Hadrian’s Arch, and the Acropolis.

Evening at leisure, where you can explore Athens on your own or join in for a group walk to the Thission open air cinema.
